DOWN AT THE CROSS
Nancy Bond at Stuff 4 Church

This drama has no speaking parts.  It is acted out to the song Down at the Cross by a group called "The Kry" on their CD "What About NOW".  It is a very moving piece!!  Even though there are no lines, actors/actresses must still memorize what to do when!  Practice is a must Listen to a clip.

There are 6 Actors/Actress.  Five of them are simply numbered because they can be male or female.  The sixth is a portrayal of Jesus.

Props:  Chairs; Large bucket that one person can stand in, Sign that reads "SIN"; a long metal chain; a large cross; Bibles; Dollar Bills

 (:32)What can I boast about?

When the life that I live has been given me?

What can I be proud of ?

But of Jesus who died to set me free.

 Set me free.

Chorus:
(:58)
Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom.

Let not the strong man boast in his strength.

Let not the rich man boast in riches.

For all men are equal

Down at the cross.

(1:28)
Jesus still reaches out

No matter how far or how weak we are.

His love has no bounds and he reaches the ones

Down on their knees

On their knees

chorus:

Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom.

Let not the strong man boast in his strength.

Let not the rich man boast in riches.

For all men are equal

Down at the cross.

Group (#1, 2, & 3) have “Bible Study”.
Ephesians 1:19, 20
Looking at their Bibles and discussing what they are reading.

#5 enters and sits with the others.  She tries to participate, but shows no real interest.  (rolling eyes, yawning, looking at watch)
Acts like she doesn’t need the wisdom of the Word – can do it all herself.

#5 “makes excuse about time”  “rocks arms like must take care of a baby” and leaves.

She is walking away and notices a very enticing washtub (“sin”).  She gets closer and closer, and is checking it all out.  She looks around to see that no one is watching. Finally she tests it with her toes.  It feels great so she steps in.  Acts like it’s fun and very enjoyable.

#4 enters from the other direction.  #5 sees her and quickly gets out of the tub.  #4 invites her to Bible Study, but #5 makes excuses.

#4 goes on to Study and joins others.  #4 talks to others.  They all get on their knees and pray.
#5
checks to see that none are watching and gets back into tub.  This time must pay money.  #5 gives money easily and is again enjoying “sin”.

Group finishes praying.  As they “chit chat”.  #2 leaves first heading toward the tub.

#5 notices at the last minute that #2 is coming and tries to quickly get out of tub, but this time one foot is stuck!  She hurriedly removes her jacket and tries to cover the tub with it, but much of the tub should still be showing.

#2 talks with #5.  Things seem awkward.  #2 leaves.#5 reenters the tub.  Pays same money as before but this time it’s not enough.  She must pay even more.  Doesn’t seem to mind too much.

(2:17)
Down at the cross come and leave your pride

Lay everything at His feet

For all of us He was willing to die

Even when we were weak

When we were still without strength

(2:42) When we were set in our ways

When we were filled with hatred for Him

Still He was willing to die for you and I

Down at the cross

(3:07 – 3:36) Music

chorus:
(3:37)
Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom.

Let not the strong man boast in his strength.

Let not the rich man boast in riches.

For all men are equal

Down at the cross.

End:

Yes all men are equal down at the cross.

All men are equal . . . (4:12) Music

Down at the cross . . . Down at the cross . . .

Down at the cross

Final end at 5:26.

#1, 3, 4 walk toward tub.  They notice #5.  She had noticed them but this time can’t get either foot out of the tub.

#5 reaches down trying to release feet and stands back up in chains.  #1, 3, 4 move to the background and pray again.

Jesus enters as soon as they begin to pray.  He encouragingly touches the backs of those who are praying and they seem even more fervent.  He goes to #5 and offers to help, but #5 is still prideful to do it on her own.  She acts like the bucked is fun, and she wants to be there.

Finally, #5 kneels down and prays.  Jesus reaches out to her with both hands.  #5 reaches out hands to Him.  He gently removes the chains and helps her step out of the bucket.

#5 kneels at the cross to pray.  Others join her in encouragement.  Jesus looks up toward heaven in prayer as the song fades out.
